Find by Similar – some thoughts from inside a visual search company.

The visual search space is hottening up at the moment with a very interesting candidate recently being added to the stockpile – Google. This development was certainly something we at Pixsta watched and read about with much intrigue because in some ways it’s a double edged sword – on the positive side, this is our first indication that the big players are finally taking the concept of finding similar images worth investing in. On the flip side, it also means that we as a company need to begin demonstrating just how much more effective our technology (currently) is so we can gain an advantage over our competitiors. Visual search is a concept which opens up fascinating gateways to not only back-end or algorithmic solutions but also poses questions as to how best users should interface would an image search technology. You may recall that a few weeks ago I blogged about the Modista UI – I believe that that whilst novel interfaces will become important for sites wishing to utilize visual search technology..this will be far less important when it is applied to more useful applications such as visual similarity results for the images or video clips in a page. If Pixsta are able to prove that we can make our technology profitable in one area, it may be just the ticket we need to tackle generic visual search as a whole. I for one will definitely be watching on with much interest in what happens. Stay tuned for more, avid readers.
